The challenge: automate industrial audits
An industrial audit starts with a plan and ends with an approved report and follow-up on corrective actions, rather than the last tick on a checklist. In between are annual schedules, teams, deadlines, requests to counterparties, approvals, supporting documents, comments and evidence. When information is scattered across spreadsheets, emails and personal notes, auditors have to reconstruct the findings after leaving the site.
Web and Android software for on-site audits
We designed and developed Digital Auditor: a web application for preparing and managing audits, an Android app for on-site work and a backend for exchanging data. The web interface helps coordinators schedule audits and manage approvals. In the mobile app, specialists work through a multilevel checklist and attach evidence to specific questions, including offline. Once synchronized, the results support reporting, analysis and corrective actions.
Audit planning and multilevel checklists
In the web application, coordinators plan audits several years ahead, assign sites, audited organizations and teams, and prepare checklists and deadlines. Search and filters help them find audits by organization, site, dates and status.
Each audit brings participants, documents, checklists, approvers, deadlines and comments together in one place. Each stage has an owner, a deadline and a control condition: its status shows both where the audit stands and what needs to happen next.
On a smartphone, this complex structure becomes a clear path: audit → checklist → section → operation group → question. Lists show the organization, audit type, status and date. Statuses and scores make progress visible without opening every section.
Capture nonconformities and evidence on site
Each question brings together what an auditor needs on site: the requirement, assessment, nonconformity, recommendation and comment. Photos, documents, audio and video are attached to the relevant question, so they do not need to be matched with notes later.
We added a dedicated audio-note workflow for quick observations. Recording starts directly from a question, displays its current state and stays with the audit materials. A smartphone therefore combines a checklist, notebook, voice recorder and evidence folder.
Digital Auditor maps findings against control areas and highlights processes requiring attention first. Auditors begin their review with a process risk map rather than an empty list.
Offline Android audits with synchronization
Reliable internet cannot be taken for granted at industrial sites. The mobile app stores data locally, allowing auditors to complete checks offline and synchronize results when a connection returns. Save states and storage controls are built into the interface, keeping technical complexity out of the working process.
Audit reports, approvals and analytics
After synchronization, collected materials return to the shared system. It tracks changes and notifies owners about deadlines and approvals. Reports take shape during the audit, drawing on the audit plan, checklist, assessment results, identified nonconformities, improvement areas and supporting evidence.
The web application generates plans and reports, exports section results and provides analytics for a selected audit schedule. Individual answers form a traceable audit history: which requirements were checked, what evidence supports each finding, who approved the materials and what should happen next.

The result: a connected audit workflow
Digital Auditor connects audit preparation, execution and completion in one system. Observations and evidence stay linked to checklist requirements and feed into reports.
Coordinators can manage a portfolio of audits and track each one. Specialists have a clear field tool with assigned audits, multilevel checklists, findings, comments and evidence in one workflow. Managers can see which requirements were checked, what nonconformities were found, which materials support the findings and what actions should follow.
The central principle is to preserve the link between a requirement, an observation and its evidence while still on site. That link remains available during reporting, approvals and corrective actions.
